To activate a Phra Rahu statue, one typically engages in specific rituals and offerings aimed at appeasing and seeking blessings from the deity. These practices are rooted in Thai Buddhist and Hindu traditions, where Phra Rahu is revered as a powerful entity influencing fate, fortune, and protection.

The primary method for activating a Phra Rahu statue involves making offerings and chanting specific prayers (Kata Bucha). The initial activation ceremony, known as Piti Buang Suang Bucha Pra Rahu, is traditionally performed on a Wednesday evening, specifically from 7 p.m. onwards.

Here's a step-by-step guide to activating a Phra Rahu statue:

Preparations and Offerings

  1. Gather Black Offerings: Phra Rahu is strongly associated with the color black. Therefore, offerings should predominantly be black in color. Common items include:

    • 10 black incense sticks ('Toop' in Thai).

    • Five types of black food offerings. Examples include black sticky rice, black jelly grass drink, black semolina or sago pudding, black chicken, black liquor, black beans, black eggs, black grapes, black sesame seeds, black coffee, or black tea. Some traditions suggest offering eight or nine black items, as these numbers are considered auspicious.

    • Other black items like black flowers, black joss sticks, black candles, and black cloth with magic figures may also be offered.

  2. Set up the Altar: Place the Phra Rahu statue as the object of focus. Arrange the offerings around it.

Chanting and Prayer

  1. Light Incense: Light the 10 black incense sticks.

  2. Chant the Kata Bucha Pra Rahu: The main mantra to be chanted is:

    • "Idtipiso Pakawaa Pra Rahuu Sataewaa Samaa Winyaana Idtipiso Pakawaa Putta Sangmi"

    • This mantra should be chanted 12 repetitions

  3. Daytime and Nighttime Chants: Depending on the time of day, specific additional Katas can be chanted:

    • Kata Surya Buppaa (for daytime chanting): "Gusaedto Ma Ma Gusaedto-dto Laalaa Ma Ma Dtolaamo Tolaamo Ma Ma Tolaamo Ma Ma Tolaamodtang Haegudti Ma Ma Haegudti"

    • Kathaa Jantrabupbhaa (for nighttime chanting): "Yadt-thadtang Ma Ma Dtangthaya Dtawadtang Mamadtang Wadtidtang Saegaa Ma Ma Gaasaegang Gaadtiyang Ma Ma.Gaadtiyang Ma Ma Yadtigaa"

Subsequent Offerings

After the initial Wednesday evening ceremony, subsequent offerings can be made at any time. If making offerings during the daytime, and if obtaining food offerings is difficult, only the black incense sticks are necessary. However, many devotees continue to offer black foods, especially on Wednesdays, which is considered Rahu's day in Thai astrology.

Importance of the Ritual

These rituals are performed to appease Phra Rahu, seek his protection against bad luck, black magic, and obstacles, and to improve one's fate and horoscope. Many believe that Phra Rahu can turn misfortune into opportunity and provide spiritual protection. Temples like Wat Srisa Thong in Nakhon Pathom, known for its giant Rahu statue, are popular sites for these offerings.
