Removing yourself from the physical world is generally understood in spiritual, psychological, or lifestyle contexts as the practice of detachment—reducing your reliance on material possessions, external validation, and intense emotional attachment to people and situations to achieve inner peace. This is often described as "being in the world but not of it".
Here are the methods for achieving this, based on principles of mindfulness, meditation, and psychological self-regulation:
1. Mental and Emotional Detachment
Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Regularly meditating helps you observe thoughts and feelings as an outsider, reducing their power over you. Focus on breathing to stay in the present moment rather than worrying about the past or future.
Detach from Thoughts: Realize that thoughts are just mental activity, not the ultimate truth. Practice "detached mindfulness," which involves observing thoughts without reacting to or analyzing them.
Reduce Emotional Investment: Learn to care less about things you cannot control. This is not apathy, but rather a "selective investment of energy" to avoid becoming overwhelmed by external noise.
View Life as a "Witness": Develop an inner "observer" or "witness" to your experiences, looking at challenges and situations with calm, rather than being personally entangled in them.
2. Physical and Lifestyle Detachment
Minimalism: Reduce attachment to possessions by decluttering and refusing to acquire new, unnecessary items.
Digital Detox: Cut back on social media, news, and digital noise to regain focus and mental clarity.
Set Boundaries: Limit contact with people who bring negativity or drama into your life. You can emotionally detach without necessarily breaking off relationships completely.
Nature Connection: Spend time in nature to help reset your mind and disconnect from the hectic pace of modern life.
3. Spiritual Approaches
Self-Enquiry: Practice asking "Who am I?" to realize that your true identity is not your body or your mind, but a deeper consciousness.
Embrace Impermanence: Acknowledge that everything in the physical world is changing and impermanent, which makes clinging to it futile.
Use Visualizations: Imagine a "ball of light" or your "astral self" moving outside your body to practice looking at the physical world from a third-person perspective.
4. Psychological Techniques (Dealing with Disconnection)
If this desire for removal feels like a disconnection from reality (derealization), it is important to handle it carefully:
Ground Yourself: Use your five senses to connect with the present moment (e.g., hold something cold, listen to music, or focus on breathing).
Seek Support: If feelings of unreality are overwhelming, talk to a mental health professional (e.g., therapist, psychologist).
