Prayer for Those Suffering Spiritual Affliction

Lord God Almighty, Father of mercy and source of all light, we come before You with humble hearts.

Look with compassion upon those who suffer in mind, body, or spirit, especially those who feel oppressed, afflicted, or tormented by the powers of darkness. You are stronger than all evil; Your love casts out every fear.

In the holy name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, who conquered sin and death by the Cross, we ask that You surround the afflicted with Your divine protection. Let the power of the Holy Spirit bring peace where there is turmoil, light where there is darkness, and freedom where there is bondage.

Lord Jesus, be their refuge and strength. Heal every wound, calm every storm within them, and restore their trust in Your saving presence. Send Your holy angels to guard and defend them, and keep all influence of the enemy far from them.

May Your precious blood cover them, may Your truth silence every lie, and may Your peace reign in their hearts.

We place all suffering souls into Your hands, for You are the Good Shepherd who never abandons His flock. We trust in Your mercy, now and always.

Amen.

Prayers for protection are a cornerstone of faith for many, offering solace and a sense of divine safeguarding against various forms of harm, both physical and spiritual. These prayers are rooted in the belief that a higher power, often God, provides comfort, guidance, and a protective presence in one's life. The act of praying for protection is seen as an invocation of this divine care, with scriptures often cited to reinforce the efficacy of such requests.

The concept of divine protection is deeply embedded in religious texts and traditions. For instance, the Bible contains numerous passages that speak to God's role as a protector, a refuge, and a fortress. These scriptures often serve as the foundation for various prayers, providing both inspiration and specific wording for those seeking spiritual defense.

Biblical Foundations for Protection Prayers

Several biblical passages are frequently referenced when discussing prayers for protection:

  • Ephesians 6:10-18 (The Armor of God): This passage encourages believers to "put on the full armor of God" to stand against spiritual forces of evil. It describes various pieces of armor—the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit—each symbolizing a spiritual defense. Prayers based on this scripture often involve visualizing and invoking each piece of this spiritual armor.

  • Psalm 23 (The Lord is My Shepherd): This well-known psalm emphasizes God's constant presence and guidance, assuring believers of His protection even "though I walk through the darkest valley". It speaks of comfort, provision, and an unwavering divine presence.

  • Psalm 91: Often referred to as a "prayer for protection," this psalm speaks of dwelling "in the shelter of the Most High" and finding refuge "in the shadow of the Almighty." It promises deliverance from snares, pestilence, and harm, with angels commanded to guard in all ways.

  • Matthew 6:9-13 (The Lord's Prayer): Jesus' model prayer includes the petition, "Deliver us from the evil one," a direct request for divine protection against malevolent forces.

  • Isaiah 41:10: This verse offers reassurance, stating, "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand".

  • 2 Thessalonians 3:3: This verse affirms God's faithfulness, stating, "But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one".

  • Deuteronomy 31:6: This passage encourages strength and courage, reminding believers that "it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you".

Types of Protection Prayers

Prayers for protection can be tailored to various situations and needs:

  • General Protection: These prayers seek overall divine safeguarding for oneself and loved ones from both seen and unseen dangers.

  • Protection in Daily Activities and Travel: Specific prayers are offered for safety during daily routines, commutes, and longer journeys, asking for guidance and shielding from accidents.

  • Protection in Times of Fear and Uncertainty: These prayers focus on replacing anxiety with peace and fostering trust in divine providence during challenging moments.

  • Spiritual Warfare: Recognizing the belief in spiritual battles, these prayers invoke divine strength and the "armor of God" to resist the schemes of evil.

  • Protection from Violence and Terrorism: Prayers are offered for peace in the world and protection from acts of violence, often including petitions for healing for victims and a change of heart for perpetrators.

  • Protection for Family and Children: These prayers specifically ask for emotional, physical, and spiritual protection for family members, guarding them from harm and guiding them towards faith.

  • Protection from Temptation: Prayers are made to resist being led astray by temptation, seeking divine nourishment and guidance.

  • Deliverance Prayers: These prayers are specifically aimed at seeking freedom from evil spirits, curses, and negative influences, often invoking the power of Jesus Christ and His blood.

Specific Prayers and Devotions

Several well-known prayers and devotions are used for protection:

  • St. Michael the Archangel Prayer: This powerful prayer, introduced by Pope Leo XIII, is a popular invocation for protection against the "wickedness and snares of the devil," asking St. Michael to cast evil spirits into hell.

  • Guardian Angel Prayer: In Catholic tradition, each believer is believed to have a guardian angel. Prayers are offered to these angels for protection and guidance.

  • St. Patrick's Breastplate Prayer: This ancient prayer invokes Christ's presence in all aspects of life—within, behind, before, beside, beneath, and above—as a form of comprehensive protection.

  • Blood of Jesus Protection Prayer: This prayer emphasizes the power of Jesus' blood to cover and protect from evil, sin, temptation, and affliction, breaking down strongholds of darkness.

  • Prayer Against Every Evil (Catholic): This prayer calls upon the Holy Trinity, the Virgin Mary, angels, and saints to purify, mold, and fill the individual, banishing all forces of evil, including spells, witchcraft, and diabolic infestations.

  • Prayer for Purification (Catholic): This prayer asks Jesus to pour His Precious Blood over the individual's body, mind, soul, and spirit, and to protect all aspects of their life.

The Role of Faith and Trust

Central to all these prayers is the element of faith. Believers are encouraged to trust in God's power to protect and to remember that they are never alone. The act of prayer itself is seen as a way to strengthen this trust and to acknowledge divine sovereignty. Even in the face of fear or uncertainty, turning to prayer is a means of finding refuge and peace.

To pray for those suffering malefices or those who are tormented by the devil, one would typically engage in prayers for deliverance and protection, often invoking the authority of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. These prayers aim to rebuke evil forces, break curses, and seek divine intervention to free individuals from spiritual bondage. They often involve pleading the blood of Jesus for covering and protection, and commanding demonic forces to depart. The belief is that through Christ, believers have authority over evil spirits, and prayer is the means by which this authority is exercised.

This prayer is very efficient for those who are suffering malefices or those who are tormented by the devil. We can say it fifty times, as a chaplet. The evil spirit is defeated by the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. This powerful prayer brings a great assistance, particularly to the persons blocked by the action of the Evil-one, and those who refuse to see an exorcist.

Saint Anthony’s brief

In the 13th century, a Portuguese woman who’d been demonically oppressed resolved to do the unthinkable by taking her own life by drowning herself in the Tagus River. On her way to the river, she passed a shrine erected in honor of the great orator and miracle-worker, St. Anthony of Padua. She stopped to pray, one last time. As she prayed, she saw St. Anthony standing before her, saying, « ‘Arise woman, and take this paper, which will free you from the molestations of the Evil One. » Then he gave her a parchment inscribed with what is now known as the « Brief (i.e., « Letter ») of St. Anthony, » and she was now free from demonic oppression and the desire to do away with herself. News of this miracle spread, even to the King who asked the woman for the Brief. He placed it with the Crown Jewels of Portugal, which was fine for the King, but bad for the woman. After the Brief was no longer with her, she began to weaken and lapse, so the King made a copy for her that restored her to her healed state. Other copies of the Brief were spread to help the faithful fight the Evil One and remind them that Christ has conquered.

The Brief consists of a depiction of a Cross, and words which, forming a rhyme in the Latin, hearken back to Apocalypse 5:5, « And one of the ancients said to me: Weep not: behold the

lion of the tribe of Juda, the root of David, hath prevailed to open the book and to loose the seven seals thereof. »
