According to Catholic teaching, the souls of the dead can potentially manifest to the living, but this is always by God's permission and for a specific, purposeful reason, such as to request prayers. The Church is cautious about the idea of "wandering ghosts" and teaches that most "hauntings" are likely either natural phenomena, psychological experiences, or demonic deceptions.
Catholic Teaching on Spirits and the Dead
God's Providence: The primary teaching is that nothing in the spiritual realm happens outside of God's control. Any authentic manifestation of a departed soul is permitted by God for the spiritual benefit of the living, such as to bring comfort or call for conversion.
Souls in Purgatory: Catholic tradition includes accounts, some from saints like St. Padre Pio, of souls in purgatory appearing to the living to ask for prayers and Masses to aid their purification.
Demonic Deception: The Church strongly warns that fallen angels (demons) can impersonate the dead to deceive, confuse, or instill fear in the living. The user is cautioned against engaging with, seeking out, or attempting to communicate with spirits, as this is a form of necromancy and divination, which is forbidden in the Catholic faith as it opens the door to evil spirits.
Discernment: A key aspect of Catholic teaching is discernment. If an experience with a spirit leads you to prayer, confession, Mass, or a deeper trust in God, it may be from God. If it causes fear, confusion, or pulls you away from the faith, it should be rejected as potentially demonic.
How to Respond
If you feel the presence of a spirit in your home, the Catholic response is not to engage with it directly or use paranormal equipment. Instead, you should:
Pray for the deceased person, offering prayers or having a Mass said for their soul.
Seek help from the Church: Contact your local parish priest. They may perform a house blessing to reaffirm God's presence and protection.
Avoid the occult: Stay away from Ouija boards, tarot cards, séances, or any practices that attempt to summon or manipulate spirits, as these are considered dangerous and are explicitly forbidden.
