During This Lenten Season: Reflections on Spiritual Protection and Deliverance

As I sit here in the quiet of evening, with the soft glow of a candle on my desk and the Lenten season unfolding around me, my heart feels heavy yet hopeful – heavy for all those who carry burdens they cannot fully explain, and hopeful because I have found tools and truths that have lightened my own load. This season of repentance, sacrifice, and drawing closer to God has led me to delve deeply into the reality of spiritual warfare, and I feel it is time to share what I have learned and experienced, in the hope that it may bring comfort to someone who is struggling.

The Unseen Battle We Face

We live in a world that often prioritizes what can be seen, touched, and measured – but those of us who have walked through dark valleys of anxiety, unexplained fear, or persistent spiritual unrest know that there is more to our existence than what meets the eye. There are battles we fight every day that leave no physical marks, struggles that make us feel as though we are wrestling against a force we cannot name. I have felt it myself – moments when worry would grip my chest so tightly I could barely breathe, when negative thoughts would flood my mind despite my best efforts to focus on good, when a sense of heaviness would settle over me for no apparent reason. It took me a long time to recognize that these were not just random emotions or mental health challenges, but signs of an unseen battle being waged around and within us.

In these moments, I have turned to prayer with a new urgency, crying out to God: “Give us authority to fight the unseen, a battle that we cannot see. Protect us from all demonic oppression, and remove every chain that binds us to darkness.” This prayer has become a cornerstone of my Lenten practice – a reminder that we do not fight alone, and that God has given us the power to stand firm against all forms of spiritual darkness. Scripture tells us that we have authority through Christ, and when we pray in faith, we tap into that divine strength.

The Deliverance Prayer for the Laity by Father Chad Ripperger

For those who are seeking a structured, scripture-based way to approach deliverance and protection, I cannot speak highly enough of the Deliverance Prayer for the Laity by Father Chad Ripperger. I first came across this prayer during a particularly difficult time in my life, when anxiety was making it nearly impossible for me to function day to day. What struck me most about it was how it balances reverence for God’s power with a clear understanding of the spiritual realm we navigate.

The prayer is not about confronting darkness with anger or arrogance, but about claiming the victory that Christ already won on the cross. It addresses not only personal oppression but also the influence of darkness on our families, our communities, and our lives as a whole. For anyone who feels overwhelmed by anxiety, who senses that something is holding them back from living the full life God intends, or who simply wants to strengthen their spiritual defenses during this Lenten season, I encourage you to seek out this prayer from a trusted, authorized source. It has brought me a sense of peace and clarity that I had not thought possible, and I have seen it bring transformation to the lives of friends and family members as well.

Additional Practices: Sage and Anointing Oil

While prayer is the foundation of all spiritual protection and deliverance, I have also found that certain practices can complement our prayers and help create a space for God’s presence to work more powerfully. I want to be clear that these practices are not a replacement for prayer or for seeking guidance from a trusted spiritual leader – rather, they are tools that can support our efforts to walk in light and freedom.

One practice that has been meaningful to me is the use of sage. I have learned that in many spiritual traditions, sage is used to clear spaces of negative energy and to create an environment where good can flourish. From my own experience, there have been times when prayer alone did not seem to shift a particularly strong presence of darkness – what I have heard described as “elite demons” that require more intentional action to remove. In these moments, burning sage with a prayer of purification has helped to break the hold of that darkness, creating a clean space where God’s protection can take root. I always approach this practice with respect, praying as I light the sage and asking God to guide its use for His purposes alone.

Another practice that has been invaluable to me is anointing myself with oil during times of spiritual attack. There have been moments when I have felt a sharp pressure or heaviness on my head – a sensation I have come to recognize as a direct spiritual assault. During these times, I take oil that has been blessed for sacred use and anoint my forehead, praying for God’s protection and for the authority to resist the attack. Scripture speaks of anointing oil as a symbol of God’s presence and power, and I have found that this physical act serves as a powerful reminder of the spiritual armor we wear in Christ. It helps me to ground myself in faith and to stand firm until the attack passes.

A Call to Support and Community

As we walk through this Lenten season, I want to remind anyone who is struggling that you are not alone. Spiritual warfare can be isolating – we may feel afraid to speak about what we are experiencing, worried that others will not understand or will dismiss our struggles as mere imagination or mental illness. But I have learned that there is great strength in community, in finding others who have walked similar paths and who can offer support, prayer, and guidance.

If you are dealing with anxiety, spiritual oppression, or any form of unseen struggle, I encourage you to reach out to a trusted priest, pastor, or spiritual director who can help you navigate this journey. They can provide guidance on prayer, help you discern the nature of what you are facing, and ensure that any practices you use are aligned with your faith and values. This Lenten season is a time of transformation – a time to turn away from darkness and draw closer to the light of Christ. May we all find the courage to face our unseen battles with faith, the support we need to walk through them, and the peace that comes from knowing we are loved and protected by our Creator.

As I close this entry, I say a prayer for all who read these words: “God of all power and love, protect those who are struggling today. Give them authority to fight the unseen battles in their lives, remove every trace of demonic oppression, and fill their hearts with peace. May they know that they are not alone, and that Your light will always overcome the darkness. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Until Next Time,

Yuna
