The Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, famously recited daily by Padre Pio for those who sought his prayers, is a powerful nine-day prayer sequence focused on trust in Jesus's words and compassion. This novena is traditionally prayed for nine days leading up to the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart, which in 2025 falls on June 27th, making the recommended dates June 18–26, 2025. However, it can be prayed at any time of the year, or even perpetually, as Padre Pio himself did.
The novena consists of three main prayers, each beginning with a quote from Jesus, followed by an "Our Father," "Hail Mary," "Glory Be to the Father," and the declaration, "Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you."
The three main prayers are as follows:
First Prayer: "O my Jesus, you have said: 'Truly I say to you, ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.' Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of [insert your intention.]"
Second Prayer: "O my Jesus, you have said: 'Truly I say to you, if you ask any thing of the Father in my name, He will give it to you.' Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of [insert your intention.]"
Third Prayer: "O my Jesus, you have said: 'Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away.' Encouraged by your infallible words I now ask for the grace of [insert your intention.]"
Following these three prayers, a concluding prayer is recited: "O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of you, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your tender mother and ours."
The novena concludes with the "Hail, Holy Queen" (Salve Regina) and the invocation, "St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us." Some versions also include "Saint Pio and Saint Rocco, pray for us" or "Saint Pio and Saint Rocco, intercede for us".
This devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was popularized by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, who received visions from Jesus emphasizing this devotion. Jesus made twelve specific promises to those who honor His Sacred Heart, including graces necessary for their state of life, peace in families, consolation in troubles, and refuge in life and death. To receive these promises, one is encouraged to receive Communion frequently, go to Confession and receive the Eucharist on the first Friday of nine consecutive months, and celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The Feast of the Sacred Heart has also been designated by Saint Pope John Paul II as the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests.
Saint Padre Pio said every day this novena for all those who asked him to pray for them. We are invited to say also this novena and to pray with the Padre Pio who is now in heaven.
