Prayer for Enemies
Lord Jesus Christ, You taught us to love our enemies And to pray for those who persecute us. I bring before You those who have wronged me, Those I struggle to forgive, And those who stand against me.
Heal my heart of anger, resentment, and fear. Replace bitterness with mercy, And grant me the grace to forgive as You forgive— Freely, patiently, and completely.
Bless them, Lord, with light where there is darkness, Peace where there is conflict, And truth where there is confusion. If it is Your will, restore what has been broken And lead us all closer to Your Sacred Heart.
Make me an instrument of Your peace, So that hatred may give way to love, And division to reconciliation.
Amen.
When praying for enemies, various approaches are suggested within Christian traditions, ranging from seeking justice and protection to praying for their salvation and blessing.
One perspective emphasizes praying for divine intervention against those who cause harm. This includes asking God to expose their lies, thwart their plans, and bring about their downfall, not necessarily for their destruction, but as an object lesson to others and to vindicate the righteous. Such prayers often draw inspiration from Psalms, seeking God's protection and justice against adversaries who act out of malice or injustice. For instance, prayers may ask for enemies to fall into their own traps or for their accusations to be silenced, trusting in God as a warrior who fights for His people.
Another prominent approach, rooted in the teachings of Jesus, is to love one's enemies and pray for those who persecute you. This perspective encourages believers to pray for the salvation of their enemies, recognizing that even those who seem irredeemable can be transformed, much like the apostle Paul, who was once a persecutor of Christians. Prayers for enemies can also include asking for blessings upon them, desiring their repentance, and for God's will to be done in their lives, similar to the Lord's Prayer. This does not mean condoning their harmful actions, but rather seeking their spiritual well-being and transformation. It's also advised to pray for God to restrain evil when enemies do not repent, and for divine justice, with the understanding that God's judgment can lead to a desire for Him.
Furthermore, prayers for enemies can involve seeking Christian reconciliation and meekness, asking for the grace to forgive injuries and overcome malevolence with love. This includes praying for their true peace and forgiveness of sins, and that they might not leave this life without faith and sincere conversion. Some prayers also focus on protection from spiritual enemies, acknowledging that the ultimate adversary is often seen as the Devil, who uses people to accomplish his work. In such cases, believers may pray for the full armor of God to stand against evil schemes and for the neutralization of enemies through prayer and the grace of the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER: "Jesus, who commanded us to forgive and love those who do us wrong, I beg you for the sake of your Precious Blood: grant me the strength to observe this commandment of yours.
Jesus, who from the Cross prayed,
"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." For the sake of your Precious Blood, grant that I may carry out this heroic act towards my enemies. Jesus, for the sake of your Precious Blood, I beg you that they may repent and sing your praises one day with me in heaven.
Jesus, Divine Lamb, sacrificed for the peace, love, and salvation of the world, graciously hear and grant this prayer of mine. Amen."
