Prayer to Mary Star of the Sea Patroness of Sea Travelers

Updated: Dec 16, 2025

Prayer to Mary, Star of the Sea

O Mary, Star of the Sea, watch over us as we sail through the waters of life. Guide and protect all those who travel by sea, calm the storms that threaten, and bring us safely to our destination.

Holy Mother, shine your light upon us so that we may always follow your Son, Jesus Christ, and remain steadfast in faith, hope, and love. Protect our families, our homes, and our hearts, and keep us mindful of God’s presence in every journey.

Amen.

Mary, Star of the Sea, also known by her Latin title "Stella Maris," is a revered title for the Blessed Virgin Mary within Catholicism. She is considered the patroness of seafarers, sailors, coastal communities, those in need of guidance, and travelers. This title reflects Mary's role as a guiding light through life's challenges, much like the North Star guides sailors across the ocean.

The historical interpretation of "Stella Maris" stems from a linguistic evolution. The word "mar" in some interpretations rendered Mary's name to mean "drop of the sea." Saint Jerome later translated this into Latin as stilla maris, which eventually transformed into stella maris (star of the sea). This imagery resonated with mariners who relied on stars for navigation, thus associating Mary with guidance towards "Eternal Shores".

Numerous prayers are dedicated to Mary, Star of the Sea. One prominent prayer is that of Saint Pope John Paul II, which asks Mary to "guide seafarers across all dark and stormy seas that they may reach the haven of peace and light prepared in Him who calmed the sea." This prayer also extends to guiding individuals through the "oceans of the world and cross the deserts of our time," emphasizing reliance on her Son, Jesus, for direction. The prayer concludes with invocations such as "Our Lady of Peace, pray for us!" and "Bright Star of the Sea, guide us!" A novena to Our Lady Star of the Sea typically includes the "Ave Maris Stella" (Hail, Bright Star of Ocean) prayer, which praises Mary as "God's own Mother blest" and a "gate of heavenly rest," seeking her intercession for peace, freedom from sin, and guidance towards Jesus. The novena also incorporates the Prayer of Pope John Paul II and concluding prayers like the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. Intentions for this novena can be varied, but commonly include prayers for the protection of travelers, comfort for those in sorrow, guidance in decision-making, healing for the sick, protection of families, peace in the world, deepening of faith, and conversion of hearts. The feast day for Mary, Star of the Sea, is observed on September 27.

OTHER PRAYER: "Star of the Sea, great Mother of God and our Mother also, you who know all the dangers of body and soul which crowd in on seafarers, protect your sons who sail the sea and their families who await them. Star of the Sea and Mother of the Holy Church, give light and strength to the priests and laity who carry the love of your Divine Son in the midst of seafarers and fill their hearts with superhuman and life-giving apostolate. Star of the Sea, light in the darkness, be a guide to those who sail the seas in the storms and dangers of life, and lead us all to the safe harbor of our Heavenly Native land. Amen."
