Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe

O Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, mystical rose, Mother of the Americas, we come to you with love, trust, and devotion.

You appeared to Saint Juan Diego, bringing a message of hope, mercy, and God’s love. Intercede for us with your Son, Jesus Christ, that we may receive His grace, guidance, and protection.

Help us to live according to God’s will, to love one another as Christ loves us, and to bring peace and justice to our families and communities. Obtain for us strength in trials, courage in difficulties, and a heart always open to God’s love.

O Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of all the faithful, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe

Prayers to Our Lady of Guadalupe often express devotion, seek intercession, and ask for guidance and protection from the Blessed Virgin Mary under this specific title. These prayers draw upon the historical apparitions to Saint Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico in the 16th century, where she promised her compassion and help to those who seek her

One common prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe, often attributed to Pope Saint John Paul II, begins: "O Immaculate Virgin Mother of the true God and Mother of the Church! You, who from this place revealed your clemency and your pity to all those who ask for your protection; hear the prayer that we address to you with filial trust, and present it to your Son Jesus, our sole Redeemer."  This prayer continues by dedicating one's being, love, life, work, joys, infirmities, and sorrows to her, asking for peace, justice, and prosperity for peoples, and for guidance along the path of faithfulness to Jesus Christ. It also includes petitions for bishops, for a hunger for holiness among the People of God, and for abundant vocations. A significant part of this prayer asks for "the grace of loving and respecting life in its beginnings, with the same love with which you conceived in your womb the life of the Son of God," and for the protection of families and the blessing of children's upbringing. It further implores her to teach us to continually go to Jesus, to rise again if we fall through the Sacrament of Penance, and to grant a great love for all the holy Sacraments.

Another widely used prayer, often referred to as "Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe" or a general prayer, states: "O our Lady of Guadalupe, mystical rose, make intercession for Holy Church, protect the Sovereign Pontiff, help all those who invoke thee in their necessities, and since thou art the ever Virgin Mary and Mother of the true God, obtain for us from thy most holy Son the grace of keeping our faith, sweet hope in the midst of the bitterness of life, burning charity and the precious gift of final perseverance." This prayer often includes a section where one can state a personal prayer request. It also invokes her as the "Queen of Martyrs" and "Queen of Apostles," seeking strength, guidance in avoiding sin, and aid in winning souls for Christ.

A specific prayer for unborn children, often used by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), addresses her as "Virgin of Guadalupe, Patroness of unborn children," imploring her intercession for every child at risk of abortion. It asks her to help expectant parents welcome the gift of life, console those who have lost a child through abortion, and lead them to forgiveness and healing. This prayer also seeks guidance for public officials to defend human life through just laws and inspires believers to bring their faith into public life to speak for the voiceless.

Other common prayers include the "Memorare to Our Lady of Guadalupe," which recalls her promise to show compassion and pity to those who seek her help, and the "Morning Offering to Our Lady of Guadalupe," which unites one's daily thoughts, words, acts, and sufferings to her Immaculate Heart. The devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12th.
