Prayer to Our Lady of Peace

O Mary, Our Lady of Peace, Gentle Mother and faithful guide, watch over all who travel far from home. Guard our paths, calm our fears, and protect us from every danger of body and soul.

As we journey through unfamiliar roads and uncertain days, cover us with your mantle of peace. Intercede for us before your Son, Jesus Christ, that our travels may be safe, our hearts tranquil, and our return filled with gratitude.

Lead us always to Christ, the Prince of Peace, that wherever we go, we may carry His love, patience, and mercy to others.

When seeking intercession for travel, particularly for peace and safety, several Marian titles and saints are traditionally invoked within Catholicism. These include Our Lady of Peace, Our Lady of Good Voyage, Our Lady of the Highway, Our Lady of the Way, and Our Lady of the Air. Our Lady of Peace is a significant Marian title for travelers, particularly when seeking peace and safety during journeys. Devotion to Our Lady of Peace dates back to the 1500s, originating in France. One tradition recounts a statue of Mary holding the Christ Child and an olive branch, which became central to this devotion. This statue was later enshrined in a Capuchin monastery and blessed by the papal nuncio, with Pope Alexander VII establishing July 9th as her feast day for the Capuchin order. Another tradition from El Salvador describes an image of Our Lady of Peace found in a box, which, upon its discovery, reportedly ceased a bloody conflict in the area.

The prayers to Our Lady of Peace for travelers often emphasize protection from danger, guidance, and a safe return. For instance, the "Prayer for Travel" to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage asks for guidance and protection, to be kept from danger and ill-will, and to act with honor during the journey. Similarly, the Novena to Our Lady of Antipolo, also known as Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, seeks her intercession for peace of heart and soul, and guidance through life's pitfalls to reach a "happy end of our travel".

For air travel specifically, Our Lady of the Air (or Our Lady of the Airways) is invoked. This title gained prominence around World War I, with chapels and monuments dedicated to her in places like Saint-Cloud and Dieulouard, France, to protect aviators and communities from aerial dangers. Prayers to Our Lady of the Air ask for protection from danger, a safe arrival, and the calming of anxieties during flights.

Beyond Marian devotions, prayers for safe travel also frequently invoke angels and other saints. Psalm 121, particularly verse 8 ("The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forth and for evermore"), is a common biblical passage for travelers. St. Raphael the Archangel is a primary patron of travelers, known from the Book of Tobit for guiding young Tobit on his journey. St. Christopher is also widely recognized as a patron saint of travelers, with prayers asking for his protection and safe guidance. St. Anthony of Padua is another patron saint for travelers.
