The Catholic Church dedicates the month of November to remembering and praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, who are believed to be undergoing purification before entering heaven. These souls, having died with venial sins or without having satisfied the temporal punishment due to their sins, cannot help themselves and rely on the prayers of the faithful to lessen their suffering and hasten their entry into heaven.
Various prayers and practices are encouraged to assist these souls. One of the most well-known prayers is the Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great: "Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen." Tradition holds that Christ promised St. Gertrude the release of many souls from Purgatory when this prayer is recited piously. While the Vatican has stated that promises of releasing a specific number of souls through a particular prayer should be rejected, the prayer itself remains a fervent act of devotion.
Other significant prayers and practices for the Holy Souls in Purgatory include:
Eternal Rest Prayer: "Eternal Rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen." This short prayer can be recited at any time.
Divine Mercy Chaplet: Praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet asks for God's mercy upon all, including the Holy Souls, reflecting Jesus's love and desire for all souls to experience His mercy.
Prayer of St. Faustina: "Eternal Father, turn your merciful gaze upon the souls suffering in Purgatory, who are enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. I beg you, by the sorrowful Passion of Jesus Your Son, and by all the bitterness with which His most sacred Soul was flooded, manifest Your mercy to the souls who are under Your just scrutiny. Look upon them in no other way than through the Wounds of Jesus, Your dearly beloved Son; for we firmly believe that there is no limit to Your goodness and compassion. Have mercy, O Lord, have mercy on the Poor Souls in Purgatory. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."
The De Profundis: This prayer, also known as Psalm 130, is a plea from the depths for God's mercy and forgiveness for the departed.
Prayer to Jesus and Mary: "O most loving Jesus, I humbly beseech Thee that Thou wouldst Thyself offer to Thine eternal Father, on behalf of the Holy Souls in Purgatory, Thy Most Precious Blood, which poured forth from the Sacred Wounds of Thine adorable Body, together with Thine agony and death. And do thou likewise, O sorrowful Virgin Mary, present unto the Heavenly Father, together with the dolorous passion of thy dear Son, Thine own sighs and tears, and all the sorrows thou didst suffer in His suffering, in order that, through the merits of the same, refreshment may be granted to the souls now suffering in the fiery torments of Purgatory, so that, being delivered from that painful prison, they may be clothed with glory in Heaven, there to sing the mercies of God for ever and ever. Amen."
Offering Masses: Having a Mass or Masses offered for the Souls in Purgatory or for deceased relatives is considered the highest form of prayer, as it perpetuates Christ’s sacrifice and extends graces. This can be done through a parish church, enrolling loved ones in a Holy Souls Novena, or having Gregorian Masses said.
Obtaining Indulgences: Indulgences, which are a remission of temporal punishment due to sin, can be obtained and offered for a soul in Purgatory. Conditions for gaining an indulgence include performing a pious act, sacramental Confession, receiving Holy Communion, praying for the Pope’s intentions, and being detached from sin. Examples of pious acts include spending half an hour before the Blessed Sacrament, meditating on Scripture for 30 minutes, praying the Stations of the Cross, or praying all five decades of the Rosary.
Sacrifice: Offering up sacrifices, such as foregoing a treat or cheerfully accepting inconveniences, can be offered to lessen the pain of souls in Purgatory.
Visiting a Cemetery: Praying for the Holy Souls or deceased loved ones at a cemetery can obtain an indulgence for them.
These prayers and practices are rooted in the belief that the faithful on Earth can intercede for those in Purgatory, aiding their purification and journey to heaven.
PRAYER : " Oh holy souls in purgatory, you are the certain heirs of heaven. You are most dear to Jesus as the trophies of his precious Blood and to Mary, Mother of mercy. Obtain for me through your intercession the grace to lead a holy life, to die a happy death and to attain the blessedness of eternity in heaven. Dear suffering souls, who long to be delivered in order to praise and glorify God in heaven, by your unfailing pity help me in the needs which distress me at this time, particularly this one... so that I may obtain relief and assistance from God. In gratitude for your intercession I offer to God in your behalf the satisfactory merits of my prayer and work, my joys and sufferings of this day. Amen. "
