Short Prayer for the Dead

Often added at the graveside or any cemetery visit:

Eternal rest grant unto him/her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him/her. May his/her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

When conducting prayers at a graveside service, various Christian traditions offer specific prayers and readings to commemorate the deceased and provide comfort to mourners. These prayers often focus on themes of eternal rest, resurrection, and God's mercy.

A common element across many Christian graveside services is the Prayer of Commendation, which entrusts the soul of the deceased to God's care. For instance, a prayer might begin, "Go forth, Christian soul, from this world in the name of God the almighty Father, who created you, in the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who suffered for you, in the name of the Holy Spirit, who was poured out upon you, go forth, faithful Christian" This prayer emphasizes the Christian belief in the Paschal Mystery—the death and resurrection of Christ—as the foundation of hope for eternal life.

Scripture readings are also frequently incorporated. Popular choices include Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my Shepherd") which speaks of comfort and guidance through the "valley of the shadow of death," and passages like John 14:1-6, where Jesus promises, "I am the resurrection and the life" Other relevant scriptures include Job 19:23-27, Psalm 91, Psalm 121, 1 John 4:16, and Revelation 21:1-7, which offer messages of hope, divine protection, and the promise of a new heaven and earth.

Prayers immediately after death and at the graveside often include petitions for eternal rest and perpetual light for the departed. Phrases such as "Eternal rest grant unto him/her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him/her" are common. The sprinkling of holy water on the casket or urn may also occur, symbolizing the deceased's baptism and their identity as a "temple of God"

For mourners, prayers often seek comfort, strength, and the hope of reunion in the eternal Kingdom. An example of such a prayer is, "Lord God, you are attentive to the voice of our pleading. Let us find in your Son comfort in our sadness, certainty in our doubt, and courage to live through this hour. Make our faith strong through Christ our Lord" Specific prayers may also be offered for the loss of a child, acknowledging the profound grief and seeking reassurance in God's goodness.

Hymns like "Abide with Me" and "Amazing Grace" are frequently sung, providing solace and expressing faith in God's enduring presence and grace. The Lord's Prayer is a staple in many services, recited either in its traditional form or an alternative version.

Ultimately, graveside prayers serve to honor the memory of the deceased, affirm Christian beliefs about life after death, and provide a communal space for grieving and finding hope in faith.

OTHER PRAYER: " Lord Jesus Christ, by your own three days in the tomb, you hallowed those who believe in you and so made the grave a sign of hope that promises resurrection, even as it claims our mortal bodies. Grant that our brother may sleep here in peace until you awaken him to glory, for you are the resurrection and the life. Then he will see you face to face and in your light will see light and know the splendor of God, for you live and reign forever and ever. R. Amen. O God, by whose mercy the faithful departed find rest, send your holy angel to watch over this grave. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R. Amen."
