Short Prayer for the Dead

Often added at the graveside or any cemetery visit:

Eternal rest grant unto him/her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him/her. May his/her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Popular choices include Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my Shepherd") which speaks of comfort and guidance through the "valley of the shadow of death," and passages like John 14:1-6, where Jesus promises, "I am the resurrection and the life" Other relevant scriptures include Job 19:23-27, Psalm 91, Psalm 121, 1 John 4:16, and Revelation 21:1-7, which offer messages of hope, divine protection, and the promise of a new heaven and earth.

Prayers immediately after death and at the graveside often include petitions for eternal rest and perpetual light for the departed. The sprinkling of holy water on the casket or urn may also occur, symbolizing the deceased's baptism and their identity as a "temple of God"

Let us find in your Son comfort in our sadness, certainty in our doubt, and courage to live through this hour. Make our faith strong through Christ our Lord" Specific prayers may also be offered for the loss of a child, acknowledging the profound grief and seeking reassurance in God's goodness.

Hymns like "Abide with Me" and "Amazing Grace" are frequently sung, providing solace and expressing faith in God's enduring presence and grace. The Lord's Prayer is a staple in many services, recited either in its traditional form or an alternative version.
