The "O Blood and Water" prayer is a central component of the Divine Mercy devotion, originating from the revelations of Jesus to Saint Faustina Kowalska in the 1930s. This prayer is a powerful invocation of God's mercy, directly referencing the blood and water that flowed from Jesus' side after he was pierced on the cross.
The prayer itself is: "O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You." This short, yet profound, prayer encapsulates the core message of Divine Mercy: trust in Jesus' boundless compassion and the redemptive power of his sacrifice.
The significance of the blood and water flowing from Jesus' side is deeply rooted in Christian theology. Saint John Chrysostom, an early Church Father, interpreted this event as symbolizing the waters of baptism and the life-giving gift of the Eucharist, through which believers are cleansed and spiritually nourished. Pope St. John Paul II frequently emphasized this image, viewing it as a sign of Jesus' total self-gift to humanity, even in death. He explained that the blood and water represent the "outpouring of grace flowing from the sacrifice" and a symbolic representation of Jesus' unending love. Pope Benedict XVI further connected this image to the Paschal Sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist, flowing from the risen Christ and offering eternal life. Pope Francis has also highlighted this imagery as a sign of Jesus' great mercy, linking it to the "living water" he promised the Samaritan woman.
In the context of the Divine Mercy devotion, Saint Faustina's diary clarifies the meaning of the two rays depicted in the Divine Mercy image: the pale ray represents the water that makes souls righteous, and the red ray signifies the blood which is the life of souls. Both rays are said to have issued from the depths of Jesus' tender mercy when his agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross.
The "O Blood and Water" prayer is often recited as part of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, particularly at 3:00 PM, which Jesus designated as the "Hour of Great Mercy". During this hour, Jesus promised to refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Him in virtue of His Passion. The prayer is a direct appeal to the mercy that flowed from Christ's heart, inviting believers to immerse themselves in His Passion and trust in His infinite mercy for themselves and the whole world. It serves as a reminder that God's mercy triumphs over justice and that through Christ's sacrifice, there is hope and forgiveness for all, even the most hardened sinners.
