Why do I need to drink less water before going to a church service or any charity event?

Today, my Lenten reflections circled back to a very particular and practical detail: the importance of drinking less water before going to church service specifically during this season of Lent. While it might seem like a trivial consideration, I'm realizing how such a small physical adjustment can actually align with and support our broader spiritual discipline.

Lent is a time for intentional self-denial, increased prayer, and a deeper focus on our spiritual lives. Every small choice can contribute to this overarching goal. Here’s why I see importance in moderating water intake before service during Lent:

Enhancing Focused Worship: This is perhaps the most direct benefit. Church services, particularly during Lent, can be solemn and lengthy, often involving extended periods of prayer, scripture readings, and reflection. By consciously drinking less water beforehand, one minimizes the need for restroom breaks. This allows for uninterrupted presence and deeper concentration on the liturgy, the homily, and the spiritual atmosphere. It prevents physical discomfort from becoming a distraction, both for oneself and potentially for others.

Practicing Self-Discipline and Minor Sacrifice: Lent calls us to exercise self-control over our appetites and desires. While not a major form of fasting, the conscious decision to moderate water intake for a specific spiritual purpose (focused worship) is an act of minor self-discipline. It's a small sacrifice, a gentle offering up of a personal comfort, that aligns with the Lenten spirit. It trains our will to prioritize spiritual engagement over immediate physical gratification.

Cultivating Mindful Intentionality: This practice encourages mindfulness. It requires a conscious decision and preparation, even for something as simple as drinking water. This intentionality can spill over into other areas of our Lenten observance, reminding us to approach all our actions with purpose and awareness of their spiritual implications.

Fostering Greater Reverence: When one can remain fully present and undistracted throughout the service, it naturally fosters a greater sense of reverence for the sacred space and time. Every moment spent in prayer, reflection, or listening to the Word becomes more impactful when not interrupted by physical needs.

Solidarity with the Spirit of Fasting: While not a fast from water itself, this practice resonates with the broader Lenten theme of abstaining from certain things to draw closer to God. It's a way to feel a very subtle, manageable connection to the discipline of fasting, reinforcing the overall Lenten journey.

In essence, drinking less water before church service during Lent is a practical application of Lenten principles. It's a deliberate act of self-discipline and intentionality that aids in minimizing distractions, enhancing focus, and cultivating a deeper, more reverent experience of worship during this holy season. It's a reminder that even the smallest adjustments in our physical habits can profoundly support our spiritual journey.

Until next time,

Yuna
