Why do I need to take a walk instead of riding during Lenten season?

Lent continues to inspire diverse reflections on how we can truly consecrate this time for spiritual growth. Today, my thoughts have gravitated towards the simple yet profound act of walking and its importance during the Lenten season. It's a discipline that connects us physically, mentally, and spiritually to the journey Christ took.

Here's why I believe intentional walking holds significant importance during Lent:

A Symbol of Pilgrimage and Journey: Lent itself is a spiritual journey, a pilgrimage towards Easter. The act of walking, whether a long trek or a short, deliberate stroll, physically embodies this journey. Each step can be offered as a prayer, a meditation on Christ's path to the cross, or a reflection on our own spiritual progress. It's a moving meditation that grounds us in the Lenten narrative.

Creating Space for Prayer and Reflection: In our busy lives, finding quiet time for prayer can be challenging. Walking provides a unique opportunity for uninterrupted thought and conversation with God. Away from screens and household distractions, the rhythmic motion of walking can soothe the mind, opening it up to deeper contemplation, listening, and prayer. It becomes a mobile prayer closet.

Practicing Humility and Simplicity: Walking is a humble form of locomotion, connecting us to the simplicity of past generations and the unadorned journey of Christ. It encourages us to slow down, notice our surroundings, and appreciate the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other. It's a move away from reliance on speed and technology, fostering a more grounded spirit.

Connecting with Creation: Walking outdoors allows us to experience God's creation firsthand. During Lent, this can be a powerful way to reflect on the beauty and fragility of life, and our role as stewards of the earth. Noticing the changing seasons, the smallest plants, or the vastness of the sky can inspire awe and gratitude, deepening our connection to the Creator.

Embracing Physical Discipline: Lent is a season for embracing various forms of discipline. Walking, particularly if it's done regularly or involves a longer distance than usual, serves as a physical discipline. It requires effort and perseverance, strengthening our bodily and mental resilience, which can then translate into spiritual fortitude.

"Walking with Christ": Imagining ourselves "walking with Christ" through his Lenten journey – through the desert, towards Jerusalem, up to Calvary – can be incredibly powerful. Each step becomes an act of solidarity, drawing us closer to understanding his sacrifice and love.

Whether it's a quiet walk in a park, a purposeful stroll to a place of worship, or a meditative path around the neighborhood, the act of walking during Lent transforms a simple physical activity into a profound spiritual practice. It helps us slow down, reflect, pray, and truly journey with Christ towards the spiritual renewal of Easter.

Until next time,

Yuna
