Why do I need to take less sugar during lent season?

As Lent progresses, I find myself continually reflecting on the various ways we can embrace this season of spiritual growth. Today, my thoughts honed in on a very specific yet impactful discipline: the importance of taking less sugar during Lent. It's a practice that goes far beyond just dietary health and delves deeply into the spiritual core of this holy time.

Here's why I believe intentionally reducing our sugar intake during Lent holds such significant importance:

Practicing Self-Denial and Discipline: Lent is fundamentally a season of self-denial, fasting, and abstinence. For many, sugar is a pervasive indulgence, often consumed mindlessly in various forms. Consciously cutting back on sugar provides a tangible and often challenging way to practice self-discipline. It requires intentionality and strengthens our will against immediate gratification.

Breaking Chains of Attachment and Addiction: Modern diets often involve a significant, sometimes addictive, reliance on sugar. Reducing sugar intake can be a powerful way to identify and break unhealthy attachments to food, particularly those driven by cravings rather than true hunger. This process can illuminate other areas where we might be overly dependent or attached, freeing us to rely more fully on God.

Cultivating Mindful Consumption: By paying close attention to our sugar intake, we become more aware of what we are eating and why. This mindful consumption extends beyond just sugar to our overall eating habits, encouraging us to consider food as nourishment for our bodies (which are temples of the Holy Spirit) rather than simply a source of pleasure or comfort.

Creating Space for Spiritual Hunger: When we deny ourselves physical comforts or indulgences, even small ones like sugar, it can help create a sense of emptiness or hunger. This physical hunger can then be consciously redirected into a spiritual hunger for God. The slight discomfort becomes a constant reminder to turn our thoughts and desires towards prayer, scripture, and deeper communion with the divine.

Health Benefits as a Form of Stewardship: While primarily a spiritual discipline, the health benefits of reducing sugar (such as increased energy, better mood stability, and improved physical well-being) are undeniable. Viewing our bodies as gifts from God, stewarding our health by making healthier dietary choices aligns with respecting the vessel that carries our spirit and allows us to serve God more effectively.

Simple, Accessible Sacrifice: For many, giving up certain foods or drinks is a more accessible form of Lenten sacrifice than more extreme fasts. Reducing sugar is a simple, yet often profound, way to engage with the Lenten challenge of personal sacrifice.

In essence, taking less sugar during Lent is more than just a diet change; it's a holistic spiritual practice. It's a way to exercise self-control, detach from worldly pleasures, cultivate mindfulness, and redirect our hunger towards God. It's a powerful tool for personal transformation and for deepening our spiritual journey during this sacred season.

Until next time,

Yuna
