The importance of extra slippers in church service

Today, while preparing for church, a rather curious thought struck me – one that feels particularly Filipino, actually: the quiet, unassuming importance of bringing extra slippers to church service. It might sound odd, but trust me, there's a unique logic to it, especially in our context.

Here in the Philippines, slippers are practically an extension of our feet. We wear them everywhere, and their comfort is unparalleled, especially in our warm climate. But why bring an extra pair to church?

I think it boils down to two main things: practicality and community.

Practicality: Imagine this: it starts to rain unexpectedly, and your shoes get soaked. Or perhaps you wore slightly uncomfortable shoes, thinking you could manage, but halfway through the service, your feet are aching. An extra pair of slippers, tucked away in your bag, becomes a tiny haven of relief. It allows you to quickly switch into comfort, ensuring that physical discomfort doesn't distract from your worship. It's about being prepared for the unexpected, a small act of foresight.

Community: This is where it gets more interesting. How many times have you seen someone in church, perhaps a child, whose shoe strap broke, or whose footwear simply became too much to bear? In our culture, it's not uncommon to offer a helping hand, and sometimes, that helping hand comes in the form of an extra pair of slippers. It's a small, tangible way to show care and support, to literally alleviate someone's discomfort so they can focus on the service. It embodies that spirit of communal care and bayanihan that is so deeply ingrained in us.

So, while it might seem like a quirky detail, bringing extra slippers to church service isn't just about personal comfort. It's a subtle nod to preparedness, a quiet expression of empathy, and a practical way to foster a more comfortable and inclusive environment for everyone in our faith community. It's another beautiful example of how even the smallest things can carry significant meaning.

Until next time,

Yuna
